Introduction of HIS Foundation
HIS Foundation was established in 1992 as
a charitable limited company. It is a Christian organization and
its objectives are to provide disaster and poverty relief, as
well as medical and education services with a view to witnessing
Christian love and gospel in different parts of the world. (
Please see the Section below on the background concerning the
formation of HIS Foundation. )
HIS Foundation has been making effort in China to fight against
poverty, assist the needy people and care for them. It is hoped
that they feel the love, compassion and warmth of the world. In
turn, they will love their family members and people around
them, and help those in need.
HIS Foundation began organizing various medical teams in 1994.
They conduct free medical service and surgery for the patients
and provide aids for the handicapped people who otherwise cannot
afford the normal fees. These services rekindle life, dignity
and hope for many sick people. The medical teams include
medicine, orthopedics, cleft lip and palate, ophthalmology,
geriatrics and rehabilitation. HIS Foundation also provides
training for medical personnel and sponsored the rebuilding of a
hospital.
In 2001, His Foundation started to offer education services for
the benefit of the younger generation. The education services
include rebuilding primary schools in rural areas to improve the
teaching and learning environment; training courses for junior
secondary English teachers to upgrade their teaching standard
and quality of school life; sponsorship of scholarships to help
poor but able students to continue their education; donation of
library books to enrich the teaching resources of the schools
and broaden the scope of learning of the students; and
organization of camps and summer classes to encourage students
to learn actively, establish a correct value system and love
others.
HIS Foundation does not receive any subsidy from the Government.
Its income composes of entirely hearty donations. Members of the
medical and education teams normally make a donation in relation
to the expenses of their trips besides contributing their time
and effort to provide the service. We firmly believe "Giving is
more rewarding than receiving." We also firmly believe that love
can change the direction of life and light up hope.。
Background Leading to
the Formation of HIS Foundation
In 1991, there was a serious flood
among the eastern areas of China, which affected more than 80
million people and caused tremendous financial and economic
losses. Five Christian and Catholic leaders in Hong Kong started
the "Blood is thicker than water" (血濃於水) campaign. Within a short
period, a good amount of money and materials were collected and
these were passed to the needy people in China through the HK
Red Cross. A number of Christians also took part in the "Sending
warmth" campaign (送暖行動). After they came back, they made the
following sharing : "Wherever came to my eyes was a picture of
suffering and sad Chinese people. The villages were already very
poor before, and the flood made them worse."
After the flood had subsided, the disastrous situation
continued. There were diseases. People lacked food and clothing.
They just had a bit of persistence to fight against the poor
environment and struggle to survive.? This sharing aroused
enthusiasm and led to a serious discussion of how to sustain our
care to Chinese people in this era of suffering.
A foundation can take up the work of continuous support to
China. China has a vast area, and there are frequent calamities.
We must rely on God who takes charge of the world in carrying
out our caring missions.
Accordingly, the name "HIS Foundation" HIS meaning God's)
sprang up naturally. The Chinese name of HIS Foundation ( 天鄰基金會 ) was
derived from the Chinese verses 「苦難如身受,天涯若比鄰」( The meaning is :
People very far away are like neighbors; their sufferings are
like our own. )
