While serving the refugees in Kurdistan (Northern Iraq), we notice that the incidence of hip dislocation among young children are extremely high. Part of the problem is related to the way of swaddling babies. The traditional way of swaddling binds the lower limbs very tightly in extension, not allowing for any movement. This increases the risk of hip dislocation. Our orthopedic team has started a program to educate the mothers the proper way of wrapping babies. All babies are also screened for hip instability. treatment is started immediately.
